海水や血液などの液体成分から半減期の長いセシウムを瞬時に取り除く技術を発表したのは、東京慈恵会医科大学臨床医学研究所の並木禎尚講師ら。直径70～80ナノメートルの磁性微粒子にセシウム吸着材 (プルシアンブルーやゼオライト粉末) をくっつけた。こうしてできた微粒子をセシウムの溶けた海水に混ぜて磁石を近づけると、微粒子がセシウムを吸着して集まり、数秒から数十秒で99.9％のセシウムを回収できた。牛乳、牛の血清にセシウムを入れた場合の回収率も同様だった。
従来のゼオライト粉末などによる吸着は、自然の沈殿を待つために数時間かかった。並木さんらは磁石を利用して、抗がん剤をがんに集めるDDS（薬剤送達システム）を研究していて、原発事故に応用できることに気づいた。海水や被曝した人の血液からの回収装置として利用可能という。
